Take Dr. Joe Guarino's argument today that because, in the most recent City of Greensboro budget, "the police department was cut by approximately $1 million" the result will therefore be "to divert police resources toward downtown, and away from other parts of the city."
This looks like logic: "Because of A, then B."
But what if A is false? Try to make that argument without A and all one has left is an unfounded, "B! B! B!" Which is nothing more than a tantrum.
In this case, the fact is that Guarino is wrong about the City of Greensboro cutting the police budget. The city actually increases the budget for the police department in its most recent budget by $115,737. This according to documents readily available on the web.
Guarino doesn't cite a source for his misinformation, often a good clue that something is amiss, but the demonstrably verifiable fact that police spending actually increased means that Guarino's premise is a canard—fake—so what he offers as built on his broken premise is nothing more than an unfounded opinion—again.
Maybe next time.

ReplyDeleteRoch, my recollection is that George is correct. Police academy funding was cut sharply; and I amended my post to reflect that.
ReplyDeleteBut the "logic" you ascribe to my post is not what I was trying to convey. Instead, I was trying to convey an insufficient commitment to law enforcement and proper policing; and also a downtown-centric mindset that will tend to pull police resources from other areas if we are not careful.

Now I am wondering, from where did you get the idea that there were $900K in combined cuts to Fire and Police when budget documents show they both increased.
Joe, your single point of evidence for a "lack of commitment" to public safety was your mistaken notion of a cut to the police of "approximately $1 million."
