GREENSBORO, NC -- At a time when Guilford County is in dire financial straights, unable to afford such fluff as school construction, a News & Record editorial says the County should donate some $40,000 in public services for the benefit of a for-profit sports promoter.
The figure skating competition is coming. Nothing will be lost if the County declines the requested contribution, except perhaps for some profit for the promoter, but we can surely all agree that that is not the taxpayers' obligation. The cavalier and unjustified calls by the N&R to spend the people's money on misplaced priorities are getting irksome.
I'd also like to know where the News & Record editors get the "facts" they cite. Using an undocumented estimation of the economic impact of the event from the very promoter who stands to personally benefit from the County's largess seems quite naive to me. "Aw, shucks, Andy, he says it might bring $25 million."
