"Nearly any business in the county?" N&R's Witt inaccurate in his characterization of incentives plan

The Guilford County Commissioners are contemplating an incentives plan that will provide for tax abatement for businesses that add value to real estate by building, adding or remodeling. The News & Record's Gerald Witt characterizes this patronage of the construction industry as an incentive for "nearly any business in the county."

It is not. If you rent your place of business, a program that offers tax abatements for improvements to property you do not own is not an incentive for you. "Nearly any business?" Hardly. My guess would be, in fact, a minority of businesses.

  1. Hmm. If all the commissioners who have a conflict of interest on this issue sit any vote out as they should, will there be enough votes left for a quorum?
