"Digital publishing, as a music industry phenomenon for example, drove many retail music sellers out of business. How can libraries ensure that the same fate does not befall them and the digital divide between information haves and have-nots does not widen even further?"
Essentially the "Library" model will change. The library loans out Music CDsand Audio Books, but does not provide players. I'd bet a majority of library patrons have an mp3 palyer or cell phone that does that function. Get a nook from Barnes and Noble for less than what an Ipod originally sold for. The price will probably come down, and a secondary market will emerge for used models at lower prices. Maybe the library model of the future will loan "14 day" files that erase themselves after two weeks. After all we now have "14 day" books.
