How do news people maintain credibility when they get things wrong? You don't slink away from it ignoring that people have noticed. No, you address it head on, clearly and with the time and attention necessary to make sure your audience subsequently gets the right information. You are not content to leave your audience walking around with wrong ideas in their heads, because that would be highly contemptuous and unprofessional.
Say what you got wrong. Tell us what is correct. Report it and carry on:
Some news organizations even maintain a "corrections" page on their websites.
They'll continue to retain credibility until they reach the tipping point at which even the truth won't be believed.
