Who would cheer the loss of such an important watchdog? Who would possibly think that the loss of such a vital journalistic enterprise would be good for a place? Jackasses who don't want to be accountable for anything, that's who.
I give you Mayor Robbie Perkins on the subject of The Rhino ceasing publication:
“I think it’s good news for the city.”
It's good news for political hucksters and malfeasent elected officials bothered by transparency and accountability. It's very bad news for Greensboro, but megalomaniac Perkins would drive the rest of us over a cliff if it meant not having to considering anything beyond his sociopathic ego.

ReplyDeleteI agree that the Rhino's demise is a loss for Greensboro, but not because it was a good newspaper, because it really wasn't. The writing and editing was usually bad and it was often hard to tell whether a given piece was reportage or an editorial. But the Rhino covered local politics very closely, like white on rice. Was it often negative and snarky? Sure, but that could be filtered out; and besides, I've never minded negativity and snark. Given the cutbacks at the N&R and the fact that local TV doesn't routinely cover local politics, this is definitely bad for Greensboro.

ReplyDeleteWithout it there is no newsprint voice warning of abuses and excesses by those elected to serve the local public trust.
What a petty, small-minded, thin-skinned creep we have elected as our mayor. What a truly loathesome person, cheering the demise of a business based in downtown, the area he supposedly loves.
