Off the deep end II: Greensboro needs a good conservative blogger

Blogger Joe Guarino used to be a legitimate representative of Guilford County's conservatives. However strident or extreme, he used to be taken seriously most of the time  (when he wasn't attacking Presbyterians or repeating rumors of rumors of rumors).

That's gone. Now his years of blogging effort have culminated in a perpetual vomiting of rash flights of fantasy. I suppose that's what happens when one insists on supplanting thought with unyielding dedication to preconceptions. Some recent examples.
  • Guarino blows off a suggestion that the ACLU might help a Guilford County conservative who is being unfairly treated by the County Commissioners as his commenters mock the ACLU as "communists" and "socialists."
Verily: The ACLU, shortly thereafter, sides with the conservative and sends a letter on her behalf to the County Commissioners.
  • Guarino writes that the reason the local press did not report on the marital tribulations of a Greensboro Republican mayoral candidate but the national press did report on marital history of a Republican presidential candidate is because the presidential candidate is more conservative, his conservatism attracting the scrutiny—according to Guarino.
Verily: The local media did not report on the marital histories of any of the local candidates, even those more conservative than the mayoral candidate.
  • Guarino goes off on Greensboro's mayor for not attending a Republican gubernatorial candidate's campaign announcement, writing:
When the Republican mayor skips the announcement of the presumptive Republican gubernatorial nominee in his own city, it cannot be interpreted as anything but disrespect.
Verily: The mayor had a longstanding commitment to a prior engagement with the Greensboro's largest organization of young professionals.
Again, today, Guarino concocts some sinister motives to explain why a group that previously defended Guilford County citizens against a re-opening of a landfill in their neighborhoods is taking legal action to stop the disenfranchisement of other Guilford County voters caused by a defective redistricting plan. Guarino's suspicions are aroused because the group's efforts would help "predominantly white, middle class" people. (see above re: preconceptions)

With Guarino gone off the deep end, Greensboro could use a blogger who can articulate the positions of the right in a reasoned manner. Will anybody step up?

Sometimes changes in behavior parallels with a new circle of friends. When the new circle of friends can be found in a very small tent, sticking their self-appointed leadership heads out of the tent for media attention but void of any actual results, then frustration could set in.

I'm sure that's not what happened to Joe but I have certainly noticed a different style in his posts.

By the way, what's wrong with Sam the Spagnola and Sam the Hieb?

I posted this in answer to Joe G's post about Mayor Perkins:
"Mayor Perkins was the featured Speaker at an event tonight hosted by SynerG at the O Henry Hotel. I receive these SynerG notices. (The March 20th Speaker for the next event is already up)

The Mayor was listed as the SynerG Speaker at least as far back as January 6th, and most likely was confirmed prior to that announcement - which was a while before Mayor McCrory decided to make his announcement. I would say real rudeness would have been skipping out on his original engagement, after invitations had been sent and announcements had been made. Mayor Perkins kept his word and honored his prior engagement."

Dr Guarino's answer, instead of simply stating his source was incorrect about why the mayor was not there, was, shall I say, "unyielding". He even suggested the local Party ask the Mayor to "step down".

For the record, the local GOP invited Republican Mayor Perkins to this event, and most of us already knew he had a previous commitment. A commitment, by the way which any respectable public official would have honored, as many attendees to that dinner paid to see a program with the Mayor as keynote Speaker.
The Party does not chastise elected officials for imagined slights or jump to conclusions which are unproven simply because they may or may not like someone's level of "conservatism". We follow the Plan of Organization, as required to do so by the NCGOP. As a group, we do not take sides on issues or publicly speak out against candidates. We certainy would never publicly chastise a Republican elected official - who was actually honoring a commitment! Any Party official who did so would be removed by the NCGOP, and rightly so. The Guilford County GOP exists to get Republican candidates elected, period. We don't dictate policy.
I have been called everything from a RINO to a liberal - but I feel like I am just a regular Republican working to get candidates elected.

My personal favorite recently is the conspiracy to shut down Sherwood's tent to keep out competition for the acquatic center. Had to do some serious web spinning on that one.

Personally, I think his stance on birth control deserves an "honorable" mention. He said that birth control should be illegal for unmarried couples. Maybe with healthcare reform on the horizon he's just trying to find a new way to drum up business by treating STD's.

I thought conservatives were for smaller government and less intrusion in personal lives but not apparently when it comes to birth control. When asked how a birth control ban could be enforced he stated "I suppose retailers would have to determine the marital status of the customer. And police would have to do undercover work to determine which retailers are violating the law, just as they do with alcohol sales to minors." I don't want my tax dollars paying for "birth control police".

It's also interesting that he'd hold the retailers and pharmacists legally responsible but there is no mention of his profession -- doctor's (who write the prescriptions violating his moral law).

He's also certain that the "liberal media" will see to it that the new Kirk Cameron flick is a box office flop (Pretty sure it will be direct-to-video, but who knows.), while we all know that Cameron's presence alone is the reason it will ultimately fail. I still think he's trolling. At least I hope he is. No one can be that dense and paranoid.

Axel, I linked to your comment explaining the Mayor's commitment in the original post.

Anons, et al thank you for commenting and the other fine examples.

Whenever I read Guarino's blog posts and subsequent comments, I think of the movie 'Soylent Green'. I think he and his minions would be right at home and extremely comfortable living in a dreadful, post-apocalyptic society.

Well, there is the entertainment value......

Collards,

Not much entertainment value when he delivers the ban-hammer to anyone who challenges his opinions/assumptions. I was banned from his site ages ago. Now, it's just he and bubba having a discussion.

It is fun to watch a seemingly intelligent person, a Doctor for God's sake, make a complete ass of himself......

Sam Hieb has the platform, but he doesn't exercise much intellectual care; his posts are often superficial and nonsensical. A convenient example from today of the kind of broken logic Sam constructs: Because he knows little about the previous home of the new N&R editor, Sam is sure that the new editor will face a similar environment here. That just doesn't even make any sense and is, unfortunately, typical of his posts.

It's as though Art Pope's Stooge didn't even read the N&R story to which he linked.

No, we need somebody like Axelskater to step up and provide a responsible voice.

We already have Tony Wilkins, who ably represents the Guilford GOP. He maintains an affable and light hearted presence, to his credit. And perhaps future political ambitions keep him from blogging more.

The more the merrier, but I disagree that Greensboro needs anymore conservatism. One could argue, those who you are suggesting are within the "liberal" label aren't conservative in some of our perception.

By definition, and locale, almost all blogging, including my own has a conservative slant to it.

What we need is more liberals. More freethinkers, more people that define America, not within the confines of historical, or popular opinion but that of a opportunity, and that of possibility.

Roch101 said...

Well, liv, you kind of point out the problem with trying to stick labels on people to begin with. I agree with your assessment. What I was originally trying to say was that certain political and policy positions are not well represented in the local blogosphere.

Sam Spagnola is the best investigative reporting blogger in GSO, hands down, when he has the time, and interest in the topic, too good, for some people. He proved that in all the "person 1, person 2, person 3..." drama, even though I can't even remember what that was about now. Unfortunately, like Tony, he works full time, has kids and such, which can be a limiting factor.

CP, my volume is way down these days and I don't count. I think that was kind of the point anyway.

Roch, "Greensboro could use a blogger who can articulate the positions of the right in a reasoned manner. Will anybody step up?"

Dude, you've got Fec, what could you want, God?

Fec said...

Billy, whether your suggestion was in jest or not, I appreciate it. However, I contend that we need someone privy to the operation of the Guilford County GOP.

Billy Jones said...

Well, somewhat in jest but you are a conservative and you are able to to get a point across far better than most. So not entirely in jest. Maybe the local GOP should hire you to blog for them?

Fec said...

Thanks again, but my penchant for mockery which seeks to punish those with whom I disagree is not the kind of reporting we need.

I'm perfectly happy calling them like I see them from my little demented corner of the world.
