UPDATE: At the city council meeting, district 3 representative Zack Matheny said, "This is something we should support whole heartedly." District 2 representative Jamal Fox said his only concern was that the program would not be "city-wide" to begin with. Mayor Nancy Vaughan and at-large representative Mike Barber offered the most resistance with other representatives being variably inbetween.
GREENSBORO, NC -- The Greensboro City Council will be asked at its work session today to consider establishing a "city-wide wireless video surveillance camera network" for the Greensboro Police Department. The cameras, described as "patrolling cameras" would have pan, tilt and zoom capabilities and the first proposed locations would include views of single and multi-family residences.

What type are these? Is there a human that will watch? Facial Recognition? Tag Readers?

According to the police captain presenting the plan to council yesterday, there is no plan to permanently station a person to watch the cameras at all times. That's something that could easily change, of course, and is independent of the decision to install this network.
ReplyDeleteYour question identifies some other important considerations. New technologies could certainly be added on to such a system to better track and record the whereabouts, movements and activities of Greensboro's citizens.
No mention was made of facial recognition technology and while the captain did say they would like to include license plate reader technology, they found it too expensive.
