News & Record reporter Mark Binker writes on his blog that North Carolina candidate for US Senate Kay Hagan, is a member of Greensboro Country Club and was a member when the club, prior to 1995, excluded blacks as members.
Binker headlines his post with "Is this anything?" Joe Guarino and Tony Wilkins think it's a double standard; that, in the past, revealing membership to clubs that discriminate was considered legitimate reportage of political candidates. Joe and Tony are right, this is a double standard unless and until the media report this and get an explanation from Hagan.
Agreed: if it'd had been another candidate, perhaps the Blue blogs would have scathed her as did Red State on Hagan. When you run for office, you run on your entire life.
ReplyDeleteIn the big picture, no, I don't think it's a big deal just like I don't think Barack's pot or Cindy's painkillers are huge deals as long as the candidate doesn't bloviate that "s/he's" the best, cleanest, whatever of them all. IOW, if you're going to call Obama names for smoking pot 20 years ago, be sure you're not a drug abuser yourself.
Perhaps we ought to pay attention to what's important, say, fixing our country's broken spirit, instead of fixating on the long-ago stuff, on both sides.
