You might think since I'm all for this Google ultra high speed internet initiative, I'd be pleased with the local paper becoming a propagandist. Nope. Not when it comes at the expense of sidelining a part of the grassroots community support Google is looking for and covering up shortcomings in the official paid-for effort on the web.
In his article today, N&R columnist Jerri Rowe writes this:
"Our city launched the site Friday, and on Monday, it began asking the creative among us to upload video clips and write blog posts..."True. The city's
What's strange though is that, while promoting the City's official web site as doing things it doesn't, Rowe ignores Google4GSO.com, a conduit to, well, blog posts and YouTube videos by the people of Greensboro on the subject of bringing Google here. And it's not empty. It's grassroots. It's genuine and I suspect Google would get a kick out of it, even if it doesn't have the stamp of approval of the right people.
Tell us you are not surprised. Why to the talented flee Greensboro? Because mediocrity is celebrated and excellence gets ignored.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting, Anon. There are a lot of talented people in Greensboro. It is to our detriment that recognition and reward are often more determined by who you know rather than what you know, however. Not sure that's just Greensboro, but since here is where I am, here is where I will call it out.
ReplyDeleteLet's see, didn't the N&R invent the internet?... or was that some boneheaded global warming alarmist.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work. Greensboro thanks you and triadwatch for cutting to the chase.
Just a comment from the peanut gallery... Reflecting on events political or otherwise over the last few years involving the city and the N&R, I like many others thought there was an agenda, conspiracy etc,. whatever. But now... seeing this Google effort... Maybe they are just very limited.
ReplyDeleteLimited? I think that sells some talented people short. Overextended perhaps?
ReplyDeleteroch,
ReplyDeletei reckon we can put this as a show of the have and the have nots. Remember that there is more than $40,000 more to spend on this endeavor.
Do you really think the people going to the ACC tournament really care about google for greensboro?
Can't wait to see the plans for this RLF Communications pr blitz at the ACC tournament. More to come
Keith,
ReplyDeleteWho knows? Maybe public gatherings are their strong suit.
