About the City of Greensboro sponsored community meeting to hear ideas for luring Google's utlra high speed internet access to Greensboro this past Wednesday evening (video of the entire meting, Fox8 report): It was a good first step. Assistant City Manager Denise Turner is inspiring in her enthusiasm for this prospect and her willingness to drive it forward on behalf of the city and its citizens.Great assists from other staff in multiple ways too.
It was good to see City Council representatives Danny Thompson, Nancy Vaughan and Robbie Perkins there. It's nice to see that Greensboro's future mayor (pick one) thinks this kind of thing is important.
While there were some inspiring comments and great ideas offered up, we need to go bigger -- make that "broader." We need Greensboro's heavy hitters to jump in. If they are not finding their own motivations, those of us currently involved need to take their hands and lead them to the promised land -- whether that means getting them on video, extending personal invitations to come to the next meeting or just making sure that the City's application includes their remarks.
Casually surfing YouTube this morning, I ran across this video from Baltimore School's CEO expressing his desire for Google to bring their fiber to Baltimore. That is the kind of thing Greensboro needs by the truck load, on-the-record public support from our school system administrators, university presidents, business leaders, newspaper publishers, media moguls and community activists. Pronto.
