I don't blame candidates for talking down to voters. It works sometimes, especially among certain constituencies. Still, it grates me when I see it, including:
Justin "I've never raised taxes (because I've never held elected office before so I've never lowered taxes either)" Conrad
and
Tony "get out your magnifying glass and read the microscopic word 'former' preceding the legible 'Executive Director of the Guilford County G.O.P.' in my ads" Wilkins.
Really guys, there's something to be said for playing it straight.
And while I'm griping, parks, schools and public medians are not proper places for campaign yard signs. In fact, it is against the law in Greensboro to place them there. Under the category of "do they know the law and do they care?" I make note of which candidates place their sings in prohibited places and it influences my vote. School board candidate Sandra Alexandar is a big offender.
Update: Tony's ad (actual size):

While I'm unfamiliar with Mr. Conrad, I saw this on Tony's site:
ReplyDelete"Tony is the only candidate who has served as EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of the GUILFORD COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY while participating in local GOP politics many years."
He clearly says "has served." I have not seen any of Tony's ads; am talking only about the website. BTW, that's 14px font size, and not "made smaller."
I think your attack on Tony, based solely on his website, is not well founded. If his ads, which I haven't seen, say anything else, then that's one thing. But his website is accurate and not "microscopic."
(Yes, TechTriad developed the site but we do not update it.)
The lack of care in your comment makes it almost unworthy of a response, I do so only to ask you to be more careful next time. Nowhere did I say I was talking about Tony's website. He is running a print ad in the Rhino times about which I was commenting.
ReplyDeleteI've posted the ad to the original post.
ReplyDeleteRoch, I didn't see your post until today. I felt like the word "former" had little significance to holding the position. However, I very much value your opinion so based on your post I'm going to have our art department (me) change that line on future ads to display the words "served as" and "of the" to be the same size letter while still enlarging with bold letters "Executive Director" and "Guilford County Republican Party".
ReplyDeleteI think I know you well enough to know that you'll call me out on anything you do not think is proper and I appreciate that.
Tony, it appears as if the lighthearted tone of my observations did not come across very well in this post. Obviously, this is a small thing (ooh, a pun) and is trivial compared to your abundant qualifications for the office you seek. Your response to this post, calm and diplomatic, is even more evidence of how well prepared you are to serve on the County Commission. I wish you the best of luck.
