It has become so commonplace with local conservative bloggers and commenters that I no longer push back, but their propensity to assert opinions untethered from the facts is long established. It's not just local. Republican David Frum has a great article about how this fantasy paradigm must end or sink the Republican party in "When did the G.O.P. lose touch with reality?"

Backed by their own wing of the book-publishing industry and supported by think tanks that increasingly function as public-relations agencies, conservatives have built a whole alternative knowledge system, with its own facts, its own history, its own laws of economics.
