Cushy teaching jobs and slack ass parents.

I know a particular teacher quite well and I hear a lot about the ins and outs of her job. One thing that just plain infuriates me to hear is of parents who ask teachers to come in early for a parent conference, or to stay late or to schedule two conferences so that separated parents don't have to be in the same room together for a few minutes -- and then don't show up; don't call or email, just blow the whole thing off.

It happens a lot.

Conservatives are wrong that teachers have cushy jobs, they are right that too many parents won't bother to take responsibility for their children's success.

Bless her and what she does, Roch.

Had to come over to see if you had posted comment on the 1:05 AM legislation passed last night.

I dare not post what is happening in literacy classes at the community colleges. Charges of racism would be raised. But volunteer for a few days in succession in some of those classes and observe the "students" who dropped out of public school and now are enrolled in literacy classes at the age of 17, 18, 19. Class starts at 9 and ends at 12. Student drags in at 9:40 with no pencil, no paper. Break at 10;30 and that student is not seen in class anymore that day- but is roaming the halls. And then the student complains that the teacher er is not helping them because the test scores are not improving. Volunteer and observe!

Tony, I think if a state employee wants to have part of his paycheck voluntarily deducted for NCAE membership, they should be able.

Anonymous, I would indeed like to know more about volunteering to teach a literacy class. Can you tell me where to start?

Call the community college campus nearest you. While basic literacy classes are not necessarily held on that campus, they can guide you to a location. Often such classes are held at satellite locations such as churches and community centers.
And watch how the cell phone gets more attention in class from the student than does the teacher.
